 y at Wandlebury
DESCRIPTION:CPPF Annual General Meeting\, exclusive members’ reception an
 d archaeological talk\nA special evening combining our Annual General Meeti
 ng with an exclusive members drinks reception and a talk from Matt Brudenel
 l\, Director of the Cambridge Archaeological Unit and co-director of the Wa
 ndlebury Research Project.\nMatt will reveal the extraordinary findings eme
 rging from the latest excavations at Wandlebury\, including the discovery o
 f an elongated burial pit containing the articulated and disarticulated rem
 ains of at least ten individuals.\nProvisionally dated to the eighth and ni
 nth centuries AD\, the burial raises compelling questions. Who were these p
 eople? How did they die? Why were they buried beside an ancient monument th
 at was already more than a thousand years old?\nPlacing the discovery withi
 n the wider results of the new excavations\, Matt will explore Wandlebury
 ’s changing significance\, from an Iron Age hillfort to a place of import
 ance in the early medieval landscape. He will consider the evidence for vio
 lence and the unusual treatment of the dead\, as well as Wandlebury’s lat
 er role as a place of assembly.\nThe talk will also look ahead to the next 
 stage of the investigation\, including further excavation and osteological\
 , chronological and biomolecular research that may bring us closer to under
 standing what happened here.\nThe AGM is a CPPF members’ only event. Foll

 d audience Q&A\nAbout the speaker\nMatt Brudenell is Director of the Cambri
 dge Archaeological Unit and co-director of the Wandlebury Research Project.
  An archaeologist with more than 25 years’ experience working in eastern 
 England\, his research focuses on the region’s later prehistory\, particu
 larly its settlements and ceramics.\nMatt has directed and contributed to m
 ajor archaeological projects across Cambridgeshire and has a longstanding i
 nterest in bringing together developer-funded archaeology and academic rese
 arch.\nThe Wandlebury Research Project is led by the University of Cambridg
 e Department of Archaeology and Cambridge Archaeological Unit\, in partners
 hip with Cambridge Past\, Present & Future.
