SUMMARY:Talk: A History of Violence: Death\, Burial and Discovery at Wandle
 bury
DESCRIPTION:Archaeological Talk\nA special talk from Matt Brudenell\, Direc
 tor of the Cambridge Archaeological Unit and co-director of the Wandlebury 
 Research Project.\nMatt will reveal the extraordinary findings emerging fro
 m the latest excavations at Wandlebury\, including the discovery of an elon
 gated burial pit containing the articulated and disarticulated remains of a
 t least ten individuals.\nProvisionally dated to the eighth and ninth centu
 ries AD\, the burial raises compelling questions. Who were these people? Ho
 w did they die? Why were they buried beside an ancient monument that was al
 ready more than a thousand years old?\nPlacing the discovery within the wid
 er results of the new excavations\, Matt will explore Wandlebury’s changi
 ng significance\, from an Iron Age hillfort to a place of importance in the
  early medieval landscape. He will consider the evidence for violence and t
 he unusual treatment of the dead\, as well as Wandlebury’s later role as 
 a place of assembly.\nThe talk will also look ahead to the next stage of th
 e investigation\, including further excavation and osteological\, chronolog
 ical and biomolecular research that may bring us closer to understanding wh

 ce Q&A\nAbout the speaker\nMatt Brudenell is Director of the Cambridge Arch
 aeological Unit and co-director of the Wandlebury Research Project. An arch
 aeologist with more than 25 years’ experience working in eastern England\
 , his research focuses on the region’s later prehistory\, particularly it
 s settlements and ceramics.\nMatt has directed and contributed to major arc
 haeological projects across Cambridgeshire and has a longstanding interest 
 in bringing together developer-funded archaeology and academic research.\nT
 he Wandlebury Research Project is led by the University of Cambridge Depart
 ment of Archaeology and Cambridge Archaeological Unit\, in partnership with
  Cambridge Past\, Present & Future.
