Who Decides Cambridge’s Future?

A Public Debate on the Greater Cambridge Development Corporation

The Government has launched a major consultation on proposals to create a centrally-led Urban Development Corporation (UDC) for Greater Cambridge. This new body would take over key planning functions for major developments from our local councils, shifting decision-making power from locally elected representatives to a government-appointed board.

Join us for a vital public debate to understand what this means for our city and villages. and how you can have your say.

Why This Is Important

Cambridge is at a crossroads. The proposed Development Corporation would have significant powers to:

  • Determine Planning Applications: Oversee major housing and commercial developments.
  • Land Acquisition: Exercise powers to assemble land for large-scale projects.
  • Infrastructure Lead: Coordinate the delivery of water, energy, and transport solutions.

While the Government argues this will “unleash” growth and solve infrastructure deadlocks, it also represents a fundamental shift in local democracy. Decisions that currently sit with your elected city and district councillors could soon be made by an unelected body. This debate is your chance to explore whether this model will protect the unique character and environment of Cambridge or prioritise national growth targets at the expense of local voices.

Opening introduction to the Government’s Consultation on proposals to establish a Development Corporation for Greater Cambridge, MHCLG representative, Eleanor Riley and Beth Dugdale, Deputy Chief Executive, Cambridge Growth Company, followed by a Panel discussion and Q&A
