Hinxton Watermill: Where History Still Turns

Nestled along the banks of the River Cam, Hinxton Watermill stands as a testament to centuries of rural ingenuity and community spirit. This 17th-century working mill, located in the picturesque village of Hinxton, offers visitors a unique glimpse into the region’s rich agricultural heritage.

Hinxton Watermill isn’t just a beautiful relic from the past. It’s a working mill with stories to tell – generations who ground their grain here, of children peering at its giant cogs and stones, and of volunteers who have lovingly kept its wheels turning. It’s one of the last of its kind in Cambridgeshire, and it belongs to all of us.

Hinxton Watermill: Where History Still Turns

A Journey Through Time

Historical records suggest that a mill has existed on this site since at least 1086, as noted in the Domesday Book. The current structure, built in the 1600s, showcases traditional milling architecture. Adjacent to the mill is an 18th-century cottage, bearing the date 1766, which was uncovered during restoration efforts in the 1980s .

Inside, the mill houses a fascinating array of historical machinery. Notably, it features a great spur wheel and three stone nuts, driving three pairs of millstones from above – a configuration more commonly found in windmills than watermills. Visitors can also observe a Tangye water pump on the ground floor, once used to supply water to nearby Lordship Farm .

Preserving a Community Treasure

After ceasing operations in 1955, the mill fell into disrepair. By the 1980s, the adjoining cottage was nearly derelict, lacking basic amenities like running water. Recognizing its historical significance, local charity Cambridge Past, Present & Future (CPPF) intervened in 1984 to purchase and restore the property. Their meticulous efforts aimed to preserve the mill’s historic character while making it structurally sound.
