Leaving a Legacy: Protecting Cambridge for Generations to Come
Cambridge is a city shaped not just by history, but by care. Its green commons, historic buildings, riversides, and quiet spaces are not accidents of time, they exist because people chose to protect them. Cambridge Past, Present & Future was founded on that very idea: that Cambridge deserves thoughtful guardianship, today and long into the future.
Leaving a legacy is one of the most powerful ways to become part of that story.
Many people assume that leaving a gift in their Will is complicated, expensive, or something only the very wealthy can do. In reality, legacy giving in the UK is one of the easiest and most tax-efficient ways to make a lasting difference, often with far greater impact than people expect.
It’s Surprisingly Easy
Leaving a legacy to charity doesn’t usually require a new Will or major changes. In most cases, it simply involves adding a short clause to your existing Will, something a solicitor can do quickly and affordably. We can even provide suggested wording to make the process straightforward.
You can choose the type of gift that suits you best:
- A share of your estate (residuary gift), which adjusts naturally over time
- A fixed sum of money (pecuniary gift)
- A specific asset, such as property or shares
You can change your Will at any time if circumstances change, and there is no minimum amount required. Even a small percentage of an estate can make a significant difference to our long-term work. Crucially, your loved ones always come first. A legacy gift is made only after your lifetime, once family and friends are provided for.
It’s Highly Tax-Effective
One of the most compelling reasons to leave a legacy to charity in the UK is the tax benefit. Your donation will be taken off the value of your estate before Inheritance Tax is calculated. If 10% or more of your estate is left to charity, your Inheritance Tax rate may also be reduced. This means a gift to charity can reduce the overall tax bill, ensuring more of your estate goes to the people and causes you care about, rather than to the Treasury.
A Gift That Lasts
Cambridge’s character is rooted in its landscape and heritage. Legacy gifts help maintain our historic buildings, protect vulnerable sites, and ensure that conservation work is done with care and expertise. It allows Cambridge Past, Present & Future to respond independently, plan strategically, and act in the long-term interests of the city.
By leaving a legacy to Cambridge Past, Present & Future, you are investing in a future Cambridge that still values its green spaces, respects its heritage, and prioritises people over short-term gain.
