Hinxton Watermill: Vital Conservation Work Gets Underway

Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, the local community and our grant funders, essential repairs are now underway at Hinxton Watermill, helping to safeguard this special piece of Cambridgeshire’s heritage for future generations.
A watermill has stood on the River Cam at Hinxton for at least 1,000 years. In the 1980s, Cambridge Past, Present & Future saved the derelict mill from demolition and painstakingly restored it to working order. Today, it remains one of Cambridgeshire’s rare surviving operational watermills, cherished for its history, character and beautiful riverside setting.
However, the elements have taken their toll, and this Grade II listed building was in urgent need of repairs to protect its structure and keep the mill running. Without this essential work, we risked losing the opportunity to open its doors safely to visitors and share its fascinating history with future generations.

Thank you for helping us keep the wheels turning
The repair project, expected to cost £25,000, will address damaged brickwork above and below the mill bridge, helping to preserve the structure and ensure the watermill can continue to be enjoyed for years to come.
We are delighted that, thanks to grants from The Pilgrim Trust and South Cambridgeshire District Council, alongside generous donations from individuals, support from our dedicated volunteers, the local community and The Red Lion Inn, we have successfully raised the funds needed to proceed. Work is now underway!
This achievement is a wonderful example of what can be accomplished when people come together to protect the places that make our local landscape so special.
The next chapter: keeping Hinxton Watermill looking its best
Hinxton Watermill is more than a historic building. It is a tangible link to the past, offering visitors a glimpse into centuries of rural life and the traditional craft of milling. Its riverside location and working machinery make it a unique place to explore, learn and connect with our local heritage.
With these vital repairs underway, we can look forward to welcoming visitors on our special open days and ensuring that this remarkable building continues to educate and inspire future generations.
There is still more to do. Our next project will be to repaint the mill, helping to protect the building and keep it looking its best. If you would like to contribute towards this next stage of conservation, donations are still very welcome. Every gift will help us continue caring for this much-loved landmark and preserving it for the future.
We are hugely grateful to everyone who has contributed to making the current project possible. Your support is helping to preserve Hinxton Watermill and keep its wheels turning for generations to come.
