Autumn’s Tapestry at Wandlebury
As October turns the days shorter and the air crisper, Wandlebury Country Park comes alive with autumn colour. Across 150 acres of woods, meadows and orchard, the season paints the landscape in shades of amber, russet and gold, and this year promises to be more spectacular than most.
Why this autumn will be especially colourful
If you visit Wandlebury this autumn, you may notice the leaves are brighter than ever. That’s because the weather has set the stage for a particularly vivid display. This year’s warm summer weather enabled trees to produce more sugar than usual.
As the green chlorophyll fades in their leaves fade, those sugars combine with natural pigments to create the brilliant palette of autumn. Carotenoids give us the yellows and oranges, while anthocyanins produce the deep reds and purples. The result should be an intensity of colour that makes 2025 an autumn to remember.
The best place in Cambridge to experience the colours
The Park is on top of the Gog Magog Hills (Cambridge’s Himalayas) and this means it gets a bit colder at night and that helps to intensify the colours.
The park also has thousands of trees, including many large beautiful specimens over 150 years old. The woods contain a variety of tree species, with each species turning different colours at different times, creating a wonderful display throughout the autumn.
The park becomes a sensory experience: the crunch of leaves underfoot, the gleam of dew on spiderwebs, the quiet flurry of migrating birds, and low sunlight making everything glow.
Paths, peace and possibility
There’s 8km of trails winding through woodland and meadow to explore. For those seeking peace, benches tucked under turning trees invite stillness and reflection.
From Thursdays-Sundays there’s a pop-up cafe to get a warming drink (including hot chocolate with marshmallows), or why not hire a BBQ for an end of year treat?
Whether you come early in the morning to watch mist drift over the hills, or late in the day to see low sun set branches ablaze, Wandlebury in autumn has a magic all of its own.
