Learning at Wandlebury

Hands-on sessions exploring nature, archaeology and local history in a setting unlike any classroom.

Book an Outdoor Learning Day at Wandlebury

Wandlebury Country Park offers curriculum-linked outdoor learning across Cambridge and the surrounding area. Each year, more than 1,500 children take part in hands-on sessions exploring nature/science and iron-age history in a setting unlike any classroom.

We run days for primary schools, home schooling groups, young children’s groups and special needs groups. If you are planning summer or autumn term visits, now is a good time to book.

What’s on Offer

Our experienced field teachers deliver structured sessions linked to the national curriculum, including:

  • Iron Age Britain – exploring the Wandlebury hillfort and understanding early settlement

  • Habitats – investigating ecosystems, food chains and biodiversity

  • Minibeasts and plant-life – close observation and practical ecological study in ponds, woodlands and meadows

  • Seasonal Nature Studies – adapting learning to the time of year

Sessions are enquiry-based, interactive and designed to build confidence alongside subject knowledge.

Why Wandlebury?

Wandlebury combines:

  • A scheduled ancient monument

  • Woodland, meadow, ponds and parkland habitats

  • Safe, managed access for school groups

  • Dedicated outdoor teaching spaces

  • Indoor education centre as a base

Children experience history and ecology directly, rather than through worksheets alone. Teachers consistently tell us that pupils return to school more engaged and with a deeper understanding of both curriculum topics and the natural world.

Outdoor learning also supports wellbeing and focus, something many schools now recognise as an essential part of education.

Feedback from visiting schools is a fantastic 9 out of 10.

We really enjoyed the session, it was pitched really well for our mixed age group and kept the children engaged throughout. We enjoyed the hands on activities and again felt they were just the right length and difficulty for the group. Overall brilliant – thank you!
