Fire and BBQ ban introduced across our green spaces
With the current spell of hot, dry weather, we are introducing a temporary ban on all fires and barbecues across our sites until 31 August, when the situation will be reviewed.
The prolonged dry conditions mean that even a small spark can quickly develop into a serious fire. Woodland floors, grassland and meadows have become exceptionally dry, increasing the risk to wildlife, habitats and nearby homes.
The ban applies to:
- Disposable barbecues
- Portable barbecues
- Campfires
- Fire pits
- Open flames of any kind
This includes our sites at Wandlebury Country Park, Grantchester Meadows, Coton Countryside Reserve, and all other Cambridge Past, Present & Future land.
Why we’re taking this step
National organisations including the Forestry Commission and Fire and Rescue Services have warned that current conditions present a heightened wildfire risk across parts of the UK. Extended periods of warm weather and very little rainfall have left vegetation extremely dry, allowing fires to spread much more rapidly than people often expect.
At places like Grantchester Meadows, the risk isn’t limited to the grass itself. A fast-moving fire can threaten wildlife, damage important habitats, and potentially spread towards nearby homes and neighbouring land.
Many outdoor fires begin accidentally, often from disposable barbecues, campfires that appear to be out, or small embers carried by the wind.
How you can help
We’re asking everyone visiting our green spaces to:
- Leave barbecues and fire pits at home.
- Never light campfires.
- Dispose of cigarettes safely and never throw them onto the ground.
- Take litter home, particularly glass bottles, which can contribute to fire risk.
- Report any fire immediately by calling 999.
